As a perfectionist, I have always admired the detailed and precise work of Japanese potters. So, when a friend asked me to create an incense bowl for her, I knew precisely from whom to draw my inspiration. I fell in love with the process of making these bowls, from the throwing of the form to the hours of meditative cutting and carving. It has provided an outlet for my perfectionism while also centering my spirit during times of chaos and overwhelm. By leaning into my love of the Maine coast and the peace I feel looking out over the water, I took an ancient object of great historical and spiritual importance and made it my own, creating a modern interpretation using clean, simple lines with monochromatic glazing.
